Tomas et al. (2019) Assessing cellular energy dysfunction in ME/CFS using a commercially available laboratory test. Biomarker research is important because biomarkers—measurable biological indicators of disease—may help diagnose ME/CFS. This is one of several studies that needs replication before any firm conclusions can be made as to its accuracy and to ensure it is specific to ME/CFS. Clarke et al (2025) The search for a blood-based biomarker for ME/CFS: from biochemistry to electrophysiology Recent studies have found measurable differences in the blood of people with ME/CFS compared to those without it. These differences show promise to help diagnose ME/CFS. The ME Association and ME Research UK will jointly fund a 12-month study (2025-26) further exploring electrical differences in blood cells from people with ME/CFS.
