Social media users have been sharing fake images of the Hollywood sign burning as deadly wildfires raged across Los Angeles, but the famous landmark was not impacted, according to witnesses.

While the sign is indeed located in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains atop Mount Lee, the Sunset Fire is currently blazing in the Studio City area of Los Angeles and would need to roam eastwards and cross the tarmacked Highway 101 before it could climb the hills and engulf the landmark.

An expert on generative AI says the image is a fabrication. The chair of the group that maintains the sign says it was not affected by the fires.
