With Semyon Varlamov (lower body) still on long-term injured reserve, goalie Jakub Skarek was recalled from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Monday. Skarek is 5-11-1 with a 3.22 GAA and .895 save percentage in 20 AHL games.

The Islanders breathed life back into their season with a season’s best five-game winning streak to conclude their seven-game homestand. In an Eastern Conference filled with few, if any, dominant teams, they have every right to believe they can make a playoff push similar to last season when an 8-0-1 finish secured a berth.

The New York Islanders announced that the club placed defenseman Ryan Pulock and goaltender Marcus Hogberg on the Injured Reserve list.

They acquired lefty defenseman Scott Perunovich from the Blues on Monday, sending back a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft as a quick fix following Ryan Pulock’s upper-body injury on Saturday night. Pulock and goaltender Marcus Hogberg (upper body) were both placed on injured reserve Monday with indefinite timetables.

Pulock headed straight to the Islanders' dressing room just 15 seconds into the first period appearing to favor his left arm.

Pulock is dealing with an upper-body injury sustained in the first period of Saturday's game versus the Hurricanes, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. It's unclear if Pulock will miss time, but it's not encouraging that he missed nearly the whole contest after getting hurt on the first shift.

The two new defensemen seem to fit in like a glove in a very small sample size. Their ability to see the ice and help the transition games by skating with the puck or moving the puck up the ice with stretch passes fits head coach Patrick Roy 's M.O. to a tee. Both can play quarterback on the power play, a skill the Islanders desperately need.

This is becoming the norm for the New York Islanders. For a third-straight season, they are overcoming an alarming stretch of play in the first half which should doom their playoff hopes, only to piece something together in the New Year and claw their way back into the postseason conversation.

Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves, and Simon Holmstrom scored a goal and added two assists as the Isles used their biggest third period outburst since March 2023 to earn a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche before a crowd of 15,735 at UBS Arena.
