Candidates have until July 22 to file for office in the special election for House District 34B in the Brooklyn Park area.
Brooklyn Park voters will vote to fill the vacant seat of Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed last month in a politically motivated assassination.
One month after Representative Melissa, her husband Mark, and their dog Gilbert were killed, people could start filing to fill her House seat. The first person to officially file was Erickson Saye. Saye said he is a prosecutor and community leader who has done a lot of work on civic engagement.
Former Brooklyn Park City Council member Xp Lee announced his candidacy for former Rep. Melissa Hortman’s House seat on Monday, following current Brooklyn Park City Council member Christian Eriksen’s announcement on July 7. Neither candidate has officially filed for the race, according to the Secretary of State records.
Brooklyn Park councilmember Christian Eriksen announced Tuesday he is running for the Minnesota House seat previously held by Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.
