They walked for two days and spent a night out in the open. But protesting Belgrade university students in Serbia got a taxi ride home — free of charge.

One of Belgrade's key traffic arteries turned into a campsite on January 27. Thousands of students and citizens gathered for an all-day road blockade, demanding political and criminal accountability for the deaths of 15 people at Novi Sad's railway station on November 1.

Hundreds of striking students are marching through the Serbian countryside, taking their anti-graft protest toward the northern city of Novi Sad, where they plan to blockade three bridges over the River Danube.

The protests began after an attack on drama students on January 24 by pro-government thugs during a daily 15-minute commemoration for victims of a deadly overhang collapse in November that killed 15 people.
