One of US President Donald Trump’s first actions upon returning to power was ordering the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed. But mapmakers are still largely waiting for the green light.
Google said the name changes, which also includes using Mount McKinley, will happen when Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated.
Google said it would rename the body of water to “Gulf of America” after it is updated in the U.S. government system in response to Trump’s executive order.
The tech company said Monday it has a “longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”
The executive order will direct the secretary of the interior to change the name to "Gulf of America” for use on official maps and throughout the federal government, according to the New York Post, which first reported the news. Trump has nominated Republican North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum to the Department of Interior.
