President Trump has announced plans to release classified documents on high-profile assassinations, including that of civil-rights icon Martin Luther King.

The information contained in the memos won’t be confirmed until 2027. That’s when the FBI’s full audiotapes, photographs and film footage of King will be unsealed per a 1977 court order.

US President Donald Trump ordered the declassification Thursday of the last secret files on the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, a case that still fuels conspiracy theories more than 60 years after his death.

Originally released on home video, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: A Historical Perspective follows a more traditional approach to documentary filmmaking. Narrated by The Transformers voice actor Arthur Burghardt, we see some never-before-scene footage of Dr. King and elements of his life that weren’t covered in the previous documentaries.

Jonathan Eig, who won a 2024 Pulitzer Prize for his biography, “King: A Life,” said he has probably read about 90% of the available government files related to King, including a trounce of files released in 2017.

The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will once again be celebrated and honored Monday in events around the nation.

Between 1957 and his assassination on April 4, 1968, at age 39, Martin Luther King Jr. gave 2,500 speeches, wrote sermons and homilies and published five books. Meanwhile, the number of books written about King surely number in the thousands.
