The Tuesday morning commute in northern New Jersey could be messy with a mix of snow, sleet and rain, forecasters say.
Up to a foot of snow was expected in some of the hardest hit areas, with travel to become "extremely dangerous."

A state of emergency has been declared for New Jersey starting Tuesday morning for a winter storm that is forecasted to bring a mix of snow, sleet and rain to the state between Monday and Tuesday. The state of emergency takes effect at 5 a.m. and includes Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren Counties.
"A winter storm will approach the Mid Atlantic and Northeast beginning Monday evening," the Weather Prediction Center said.
Another storm threat may loom for the weekend as the meteorological winter gets off to a brisk start. The region evidently is about to experience a classic Philadelphia early winter storm — a little froth, followed by plenty of ice water. Hold the panic.
