Boeing has lost more than $2 billion and counting on its Starliner spacecraft after a rough year in which the capsule’s first astronaut flight turned into a headache for NASA.

That’s a much bigger one-year loss for the program than we’ve seen in any of the previous years. The hemorrhaging isn’t over, though. Boeing warned that more losses may come as it struggles to get NASA to approve the spacecraft.

Following the failure of the Starliner mission to the ISS, Boeing has reported further financial losses. The total is 2 billion US dollars.

Boeing (NYSE:BA) recorded its biggest annual reach-forward loss related to its Starliner program spacecraft in 2024, and has lost more than $2B since it first secured the nearly $5B fixed-price contract from NASA to develop the spacecraft.

The vice president leading Boeing's Starliner spacecraft unit, Mark Nappi, has left his role in the program and been replaced by the company's International Space Station program manager, John Mulholland,

"Risk remains that we may record additional losses in future periods," Boeing wrote in the filing. In 2014, NASA picked Boeing and SpaceX to develop and certify two commercial crew transporter vehicles.
