A light round of snow may move into North Jersey overnight, though forecasters say precipitation amounts will vary widely across the region.

While much of New Jersey could see a brief hit of snowflakes early Tuesday morning, the majority of the state will quickly flip to plain rain.

Snow could be coming to the tri-state just as December begins, and the National Weather Service now says some areas north and west of New York City could see higher totals than earlier expected.

A coastal storm is set to bring accumulating snow to parts of New York and New Jersey early Tuesday, with higher totals now expected inland.

In Central Jersey, any early-morning snow is likely to change to mostly rain as warmer air pushes in. The NWS calls for less than a 50 percent chance of snow exceeding 2 inches in Hunterdon County, as less in Somerset and Middlesex.

In Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties in PA and Warren County, N.J., the predicted accumulation is 2 to 5 inches of snow and sleet. For Delaware County, the NWS says there is just a chance of snow Tuesday, “rain and snow, becoming all rain after 10 a.m.”

As the Thanksgiving holiday weekend ends and November turns to December, New Jersey's weather will turn more active and potentially more wintry next week.

New York City is expected to see rain on Tuesday morning, while areas north of the city will receive a few inches of snow.
